Attending other courses - Attend everything, absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, acknowledge learning
A brief explanation for those that require it. Firstly, I think it is of utmost importance to demonstrate where you learned things from, so you will see on the web site that I give high praise, thanks and links to Grandmaster Sam Kwok and Bob Spour as being key elements in my martial learning and thinking; I am also at pains to show where you should go and read about a topic if it’s better written and better researched than I am able to do, thus links to Hoch Hocheim on the site. I believe, where possible you say where you got things from, it’s the only decent thing to do. Second, it is near on impossible to attribute every bit of learning you have to every thought and technique you coach, especially if you have a wide and eclectic learning landscape. I have been training since I was 12 years old, I am now in my forties, I have not only trained with Sam Kwok, Bob Spour, Ip Chun, Ip Ching; I have been on courses with William Cheung, Wong Shun Leung, Dan Innosanto and continue to attend courses and have also trained with I have no idea how many people over that period from different styles? This is also running parallel to all the learning over 2 decades in coaching, leadership and psychometrics, the books, the course, the conversations. To be honest I know where the core (70-80%) of my coaching comes from, but there is some of it (20-30%) I think, “How do I know that?”, so you know that is the stuff that I can’t attribute. Did I come up with it myself, did I join the dots from A’s learning and B’s comments? Sometimes I know, and sometimes I haven’t a clue. Finally it would be worth noting, that to call another person a ‘liar and a thief’ is a strong statement to make, doesn’t mean you are right or wrong, but it’s not a thing to be done lightly. There is also something about respecting different opinions and different perspectives, which of course can’t be used to cover up ‘lying and theft’ but you need to be sure that you know the difference about what you speak of. There is also something about bullying and aggression, that is in it’s worst form done over the internet, by posting statements without your real name and contact details, about trying to link into someone’s Facebook so you can attack them to their friends and colleagues, going onto their work site and again leaving statements about ‘lying and theft’ that are by the way liable, but of course it hard to sue someone who hides their identity. Of course these same said people would cry foul if their behaviour was visited upon them, but that’s what bullies and cowards do. So I think it was 2010, I was writing and creating the web site and getting ready to launch Defiance Combat in 2011 at The Martial Arts Show, this meant getting the web site up, to iron out any bugs and to give the search engines time to recognise it. A student/friend of mine came to the house and showed me something he’d come across on YouTube some videos of Instructor X, teaching and within the video straight away I could see a similarity in the approach and technique, so was (and still am) very interested. Cut a long story short, I emailed to attend the course in the US, as I was over there on work and was really looking forward to it, until the license agreement came through, that meant I had to sign a monthly fee to them, I didn’t and don’t want to do this for anyone, I just wanted to experience it and ‘absorb what is useful, reject what is useless’. At the same same time, I was just shelling out for a years advertising in Combat Magazine and thought actually ‘no way’, so emailed a polite ‘no thanks’ and when called by one of their team expanded on the polite withdrawal of ‘when funds are available to me’ to say, “You know really it’s about the monthly fee, I can’t do that”. Everyone was polite and we were done. So I didn’t fill out a form, send it off or receive any material other than the x pages of pre-course licensing, so to reiterate I received no learning material what so ever! So to state once and for all: I have never: Trained with anyone from this organisation Until the launch at TMAS in 2011, had never met one (as he interrupted my Skills Session Read any of the material Viewed any of their instructional videos I have seen some of the YouTube clips, I think there are about 6-8 on YouTube and whilst the Instructor is obviously very skilled, competent and respected I also disagree with some of the learning & approach; which is exactly why I don’t join organisations, nor do I ask people to join mine! But you know more than that, I just say go on “courses and learn, all knowledge already exists”. When I started in Wing Chun I went to courses by William Cheung , Wong Shun Leung, got interested in JKD and went to a Dan Inosanto workshop at the Bob Breen academy...we all did, we'd go on courses come back discuss, debate test it, take some of it on board, reject other bits ...when did that stop, did I miss a meeting?! The fact that you discovered a thing without being told about it does not mean you invented it (if you did then well done!) but really in this game it’s almost certainly been going on somewhere else by a different name or just not publicly, the most important factor for anyone in the martial arts/self defence arena is to recognise that the main difference in systems is approach, style and interpretation. I recognise that there is also just wrong, but take my point as being from the perspective of competence. So when you think I took something, actually make the effort to read the site, and in particular: How the Defiance Combat F.R.A.C.T System™ evolved The Way Next Evolution Terminology, Approach & Technique: Historical Influence FAQ If you still really think I took ANYTHING, rather than use 27 years of knowledge (Wing Chun Instructor (certified by two grandmasters), Thai Boxing Instructor, Combat Hall of Fame 2011, Licensed Psychological Assessor with the British Psychological Association Level A&B, trained Clinical Hypnotherapist, Master Coach with the Behavioural Coaching Institute, Master NLP practitioner, licensed to administer Firob, Flex, SDI, MBTI 1, MBTI 2 & 16PF psychometric assessments; Key Note Speaker and over a decade of leadership development with international companies in Europe and the US) if you think that the 4 Day Foundation, the 4 Day Advanced and the Elite Programme was cobbled together from YouTube, then frankly I must be a genius....which is of course is an accolade I am happy to accept. But really? Really? Start to think for yourself, ask “do I accept everything I am told? Have I actually seen anything that is real and tangible or have I just been told (programmed)?” What strikes me the most is the moving feast of once you can’t validate one thing you move onto another; the newest tactic seems to be a “‘well we cant prove it but we know it’s true approach” a new theme of “you must have got hold of our video tapes and material”, and frankly it’s ridiculous, find one person in your organisation who as ever trained me, showed me, lent me, sold me, emailed any pre-course work, video or anything....you can’t! It’s like a unicorn in the forest, you want it to be true, but can’t find one! Do you know the emails I get from people saying, stuff like and this isn’t me mind you, this is all stuff I get sent every time one of these people throw a wobbly - “you have no idea what these people are like”, “they are known for this”, “their head coach has never qualified in a martial art or self defence programme, never qualified on a LEO of CQB programme”, “never qualified in psychology or for that matter it seems much else”, “invented something called Chu Fen Do in his early 20’s, with no qualifications” the list goes on and on; just tap into the Hock Hockheim forum to see what those guys have to say on the topic! Here’s one example. My favourite one which I was sent recently was a chap who had quoted said coach from an early video “Chu Fen Do is basically a hybrid martial arts system, similar in essence to Jeet Kune Do, the essence is an eclectic hybrid system where you are going to draw from as many arts ascribing effectiveness and functionality....etc” and then goes on to say in the email to me “and the best thing here is he’s really doing JKD, with good branding”, the individual in this facebook post really took some time out of his day to spell out his thoughts and I get sent stuff that says “hi read about this idiot here Thus far my response has been to do nothing other than to offer my phone number for a chat and to the gentleman that interrupted my TMAS skills session a ‘handshake’ which he refused and the offer of a ‘cup of tea’ after I had finished; again refused with the comments, ‘I don’t need to sit down with you I know what you are!’. This page on my site is not searchable and only available to someone who has the link. An interesting point for me here is I reckon said coach is probably very good, I actually imagine he is an intelligent, skilled and probably a nice guy; so what the heck is going on? Easy! Cult members who want to prove their loyalty, can’t have their truth challenged and want to stamp out all unbelievers! I have to believe it’s that, because if I thought for one minute he knew his people where doing this stuff, I presume and believe he’d have to be the kind of fella to say, “stop this behaviour immediately or I’ll throw you out the organisation, it’s a disgrace and I won’t stand for it”. Because the man I believe him to be would do that right?! And if he does know, and you know it and you follow him, then that a bad choice of mentor. What’s my point!? Easy! We are all doing the same kind of thing, the real difference isn’t the technique itself, you are sadly uneducated if you think no-one has thought of it before, what we all do that is different is have a preference to technique and thinking that suits us, and a belief that our collection of techniques and approach is right. We ‘interpret it in a manner which is representative of our own approach’, then we ‘wrap a brand around it so people can identify it as ours’, frankly anything other than that is a fantasy of the highest propositions. That’s it period anything else is a delusion and you demonstrate a blinkered approach to any other truth if you believe you honestly created a new martial art or self defence system, in the sense of it being ‘never seen before’, as it has been seen before, just maybe not in the format I, you package it. That’s the fact! It’s a 2+2=4 situation, neither you nor I can argue with it. Most importantly and I have yet to say this on a forum, but probably will in due course, I actually think the material I have seen on YouTube is a wrong, dangerous and out of date; from what I can see its routed in pseudo science and a complete misinterpretation of what really happens at both a physiological and psychological level. Unfortunately many of the people involved in this organisation are clueless outside of what they have been told and have swallowed the “science” without any real understanding or challenge, they just don’t know better. What blows my mind the most though is the manner in which people associate with this organisation behave, they are an absolute disgrace and bring shame on anyone who tries to portray a public image of the martial arts not being about bullies. I have had emails with I hope you die”, interrupted demonstrations, attacks on forums, attempts to friend on Facebook to contact my contacts, and the worst of all, the absolute abhorrent cowardliness is the attempt to attack me at my work which is not related to the martial arts/self defence; these cowards try to Linked In (a business facebook), and have left comments on the company website I work for. Cowards and all done from a place of ‘we don’t like what you do and say’, the worst kind of ignorance, the reason many people don’t train in martial arts. So recently I was talking to the editor of a leading martial arts publication and he said, “so you have never met, trained, read or viewed any of their material and yet they do this?” I replied “No never”, he said, “so you didn’t go on their programme, receive any pre-course work or material as you were honest enough that you didn’t want to teach for them or pay a subscription, but just look at it?” I replied “Yes”. Then he said, “Do you agree with what they are teaching?” and I replied, “well that’s tricky as I have only seen a few YouTube clips and you know I don’t like to say anyone is wrong, but I think what they do is wrong, out of date and dangerous; frankly I think what I do is so much more deeply routed and technically advanced....I could be very wrong as I have only seen YouTube clips and that’s all”; finally he said, “The thing is guy you don’t say that, you just get on with your own thing, you don’t bad mouth or attack, you attend courses to learn, you are qualified up the yin yang and all these people do is follow the centre; you are a leader, you push the boundaries and set your own path; they follow like sheep and are scared of the ‘world view’ being challenged, they are cult members”. And do you know what ‘I agree’. I think the vast majority that turn up to learn are probably great people to know and train with, but the core of the apple is rotten as it either condones or does nothing to set a standard of behaviour, yet flies under the banner of ‘developing warriors’; well it might do at a physical level but my experience is that, that is where it ends. So this is my final statement, Man Up and come from out of the shadows! Meet me at the offices of either of the leading martial arts magazines in the UK, I am sure they will lend us a room if we ask, I will supply the tea, biscuits and the video camera, which will video the whole thing unedited we’ll have a conversation covering everything you want to discuss and we’ll have it mediated by someone such as one of the editors, upload the whole thing and then every time you or I want to discuss or comment on the subject we can just email them the link! How about it? On that note and on this topic I am done! Be Well.
