Terminology, Approach & Technique: Historical Influence
Where some of the Defiance Combat Terminology came from
I have always felt that is helps a person understand a thing at a deeper level if you have a sense of it’s history and where it comes from.
I took much of the core technology and terminology from 27 years of Wing Chun learning, development and my growth of that approach
from the traditional to a combat focus. Though I don't use the terms they act as a sign post and reminder to myself, decades later as to
where I started with all of the thinking around the Defiance Combat F.R.A.C.T System©. And I have to ask for your understanding hear as I
am almost certain that the Chinese is semi accurate. But as Ed Parker (so the story goes) said when asked by a Japanese master why he
didn’t use the ‘correct’ Japanese language, he apparently replied, “Why? Because we won the war!”
I am a strong believer that in the martial arts/self defence arena you should have a core area of expertise if you are going to truly excel
and have the credibility and competence to comment on and create technique.
Wing Chun absorbed me for a decades and so you will see this directly in what I teach, one of the biggest lessons I learned from Wing
Chun was "The muscles are used to attack, the structure is used for defense". What does this mean? If you use your muscles to push
against an incoming force, your muscles are tense and cannot be used for attacking until they relax. Therefore, Wing Chun likes to keep
the muscles in a relaxed state at all times. If you place your bones at certain angles, you can deflect an incoming force while still keeping
your muscles relaxed. Therefore, they are always ready to hit, grab or jerk. Against a strong forward force, use a structural technique and
not a pushing force to control it. This is vital and the cornerstone of everything I teach.
I am also a Thai Boxing Instructor and this has also had a profound affect on my training and coaching, and one of the key areas that led
to the development of the Arrow Position, was the Kum Chung (guard position, hands held high), this approach along with the Wing Chun
aspect really cemented things for me.

Thinking
•
Mai Jong
Closing the gap = Led to the thinking around the “Bridge”
•
Tong Shí Gong Ji He Fang Yu
The concept of simultaneous attack and defense = Is based on the theory of economy of motion, so that’s a given in any thinking
that has to be done on self defence. The idea is to move as little as possible when defending, so that your energy is conserved and
your actions are quicker. The principle is to attack and defend at the same time. Trying not to employ two or more steps to handle
an attack. The more complex an action, the more chance that the opponent will counter your action before you complete it. The
sooner you can counter-attack your opponent, the safer it is for you. It is much easier for the opponent to keep attacking you than it
is for him to also defend. This is a fundamental principle for me and thus is one of the Core Principles of the system.
•
Kum Chung (Thai Boxing)
Guard position, hands held high = This position tends to hold itself high, deflecting blows, warding off the opponent and enable the
individual to counter from what is in essence a bridge position.
