The Way
“At the most basic level, the
martial arts are nothing more
than ways to prevent someone
from harming or killing you.
At their highest aspiration, the
martial arts are paths to
self knowledge and the expression
of beauty”
- George Petrotta (2009)
I created Defiance Combat for mature, intelligent, free thinkers, who bring their ‘free will’ to the training and then are able to leave with it,
the first thing you will here me say is, “my job is to teach and coach, your job is to distrust everything I show you, try to break it and then
once you’ve done that learn.”
What I have come to recognise is that there are many different types of people involved in the martial arts/self defence community and the
majority are great people, the best of people, there are unfortunately also the polar opposites those that believe their truth is THE truth,
that all others are wrong and who are as I tend to find, followers bowing to the centre, not out of respect but from the desire to validate their
own personal agenda and view of the universe. And whilst the behaviour of a person other than oneself is not directly the responsibility of a
coach, said coach should endeavour to route out anyone that actively denigrates another person in the field.
I teach a path that is for the Gentle Warrior, a person prepared to protect himself and others, but also one who is aware that true strength is
through true vulnerability.
“A warrior, comes to see many things.
May he see himself, what is truly him.
Shall he look within and find bravery
For when he truly looks at himself, he is a brave man.
Shall he show compassion, love and tenderness?
Shall he except the guilt of deeds past done, then lay it down?
To except it as a lesson and then move on?
Brave deeds these, may he find their power within.
Many a war was fought, many a battle won.
Now he looks inside, to find what must be done.
He sees the guilt of pride, want, have and loss.
Remembering a loss, money or power could not buy.
It is time, he reaches inside and finds a gentle warrior.
He looked at himself and found a brave man.
He sees what he is, what he has been, and what he can be.
He sees the guilt on his shoulders, holding him down.
A needless load, he puts it aside, laying it down.
He smiles, drops his armour, hands out, palm up and open.
To walk softly with and for others, evermore.”

So what is the way here? It is I believe to teach others to be completely independent of you, though to want to be connected to you as a
peer and a friend; it is not to set yourself up as ‘THE’ truth, but as ‘A’ truth, no more, no less, it is to coach strength of heart, mind and body;
not the arrogance of ‘I am right, you are wrong’.
It is I believe to teach that principles of the brand that defiance is the act of defiance against aggression, bullying and intimidation at any
level, in any place.
Every teacher has their own way about them, every club and training room it's own culture and way about it, I would go so far as to say
that every style creates it own image: Karate is hard, Aikido is soft, Judo is sport, Cage Fighting is brutal and from this comes a sense of
identification.
People are attracted to the way a thing projects itself, we want to belong and associate with things that resonate and enable us to feel
connected and it is the job of the coach to ensure that they don’t become the caricature of their own environment and that even worse their
students do not aspire to the something that is the lowest common denominator of their environment but instead are challenged to hold the
line on the true spirit of the martial way, it is too easy for a person to attend a 4 day course and then to believe that they are now the true
vessel of the sacred truth, when in fact they are probably at their most vulnerable.
As the coach we hold a standard that is not about isolating ourselves from those that do not agree, but about an inclusiveness that to many
may appear weak.....and there of course lies the strength.
This is my way, it may not be yours.
